Are You Happy?

Happiness is the state of feeling content. Are you happy? Can you honestly say that you’re content at all times? Or, could it be that you are an emotional roller coaster: happy when things go according to your way; and sad, frustrated or mad when they’re not?

You only need to do a Google search to realize how many people are clamoring for true happiness. There are multitudes of tomes, courses and mental techniques about how to obtain true happiness. What comes to mind when someone asks you if you’re happy? Peace, a perfectly compatible mate, surrounded by like-minded people in a perfectly peaceful world? Maybe it’s the wish you could master all your emotions to the point where you can “tune out” all the chaos in the world around you and be in total control of your inner peace and happiness no matter what your circumstances?

You have a God-given mind to reason with, learn a trade, and understand the world around you. Then there are the “sages” and “experts” who have tried, tested and shared the “truths.” Yet, the wisdom of man is finite. Only God’s Wisdom is infinite! He tells you that His thoughts are not like your thoughts, neither are your ways His ways. (Isa. 55:8) He says that “you shall go out with joy and be let forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” (Isa. 55:12-13)

Now that’s only one of His many promises of happiness. It’s so much more than a definition or direction. It’s His assurance that, even if you started out in life as a “thorn,” in His strength and with His grace you will grow up as a tall fir tree. In the previous chapter He says that the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but His kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of His peace be removed. But He does not stop there. You will also be established in righteousness. As well, you will be far from oppression as you shall not fear, and from terror; for it shall not come near you! Chapter 24 ends with “No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, says the Lord.”

Therefore, if God be for you, who can be against you? He is the One who fights your battles for you, protects you, provides for you and heals you. He tells you specifically that you shall not fear. That’s more than a promise; it’s an absolute fact! He did not say “you will be,” as some time in the future you might get there. No! “shall” is a statement of fact; a done deal! Why? Because the closer you stick with Him and obey His commandments, the greater your faith shall grow and fear, being the opposite of faith, will no longer have any hold over you!

Now if that’s not perfect happiness, then I don’t know what is! There will always be trials and temptations, regardless of how many mind gymnastics you do or how many “how-to” books you read. But… if you dwell in the secret place of the most High, you shall abide (there’s that word “shall” again!) under the shadow of the Almighty. You shall call upon Him, and He will answer you: He will be with you in trouble; He will deliver you, and honor you. With long life will He satisfy you, and show you His salvation. (Ps. 91: 1,2,15,16)

Bless you and be perfectly happy in the assurance that you have a heavenly Father who cares for you in every aspect of your life.

  1. Yes, I am happy. I am not just happy, I am joyous. And this stems from my cordial relationship with Christ.

The Bible says, ”with joy shall you draw, out of the wells of salvation”. I have been drawing with joy, since I got saved and I can’t thank God enough for His faithfulness and lovingkindness towards me.

knowing that God is for me and no one can be against me, keeps my joy level at its peak, all day long.

    1. I am happy to hear you love your relationship with Christ.  What do you do to keep Christ first in your life?

  2. I will like to commend you for taking out time to write this article about been happy.  I will ask like to say that happiness is a state of the mind. And that the mind is the battle ground, for happiness and frustration. Like you rightly said,  people become happy for so many reason and get sad also. And some people not happy because they feel they are not complete, and some feel something is missing in their lives. But when you contact the joy of the holy spirit, you get completion, you become happy even when ordinarily you are not suppose to. Why because you feel secured in Him. Security brings happiness

    1. Great thoughts?  Is Christ number one in your life?  Do you trust him in all areas of your life?

  3. I would have to say that I’m happy at least most of the time. It’s not that I don’t get upset now and then, but rather that I just don’t dwell on it long enough to permanently put myself into a funk. I am a man of faith, so I do feel at some deep level that regardless of what happens in my life, somehow it’s all going to be okay in the end. I guess that’s why I’m not a big worrier. Back when I was a truck driver years ago, I always felt someone was there with me, watching over me. Just knowing that made me much happier in my heart. I noticed long ago that people who any sense of connection to their creator always seemed to be miserable and cynical. This was a very inspirational read. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for your thoughts.  What keeps you focused on Christ?

  4. Hi Ken

    I really like your post.

You’re right, and I think that so many people think that finding peace and happiness is an Earthly endeavour, when it’s actually a Heavenly one. I think most people have been deceived into thinking that this physical world, with all its materialism and vanity and temptations are the source of happiness.

True happiness comes with faith in the Almighty and can be daunting to confront, but infinitely rewarding and should be the truly singular endeavour of all of God’s creators.

    Best regards,

    1. Dave

Thanks for your thoughts.  Where do you turn in the Bible when looking for peace and happiness?

  5. The issue regarding Christ and the unhappy individual, is that the individual finds a “superficial happiness” and the individual stays there believing that is it. “I found my happiness.” They believe. Same thing with love. He who  does not know God, des not have love nor knows love. Same thing with happiness. He who  does not open their heart  to know God, will not find happiness.  God gave us free will; therefore, it is up t us to find that happiness. It is right there. The scripture says, “He who seeks, finds.” So, seek the Lord for the world is lost and perishes; but with Christ, we  are saved. All one needs is to test God. “Lord, come and rescue me, remove this pain, his bitterness, return my peaceful life. If it is true you are real, then I decide to have faith in you. They say you do miracles and wonders, please come do it in me.”

    1. Thanks for sharing these great thoughts.  Do you think we should be testing God?

  6. Happiness and complete peace is something that we have to realize are not bound to be a constant. No matter how much we try, there must be something that would make us lose our happiness. The catch is to know how to psych ourselves to always remain calm even in our unhappiness. We have been provided with the a huge amount of resources that would encourage us to hang in there in the Holy Books.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts.  What book I the bible do you turn to when looking for calm?

  7. I appreciate this. life is full of challenges, however, a life in Christ makes the difference. There would always be challenges, but trusting in God love can always help one to overcome life challenges. God wants you and me to be happy, that is part of his plans for us. We should learn to abide in his presence. When we abide in his presence, we would receive the grace and wisdom to handle life challenges.

    1. Thank you for your thoughts.  These are some great thoughts.  What scriptures do you turn to when searching for peace and happiness?

  8. Hello,
Being happy all the time need true courage. This courage can only be achieved in a spiritual way. That is, by the teachings of God. If we search happiness through materials, we will never find it. If we feel happy while doing only what we desire to do, we won’t be able to find the ultimate happiness. In this mortal world, it is impossible to have the ultimate happiness. Still, we are trying to get happiness to some higher degree. This is also possible only when we understand the teachings of the Almighty. Thank you so much for sharing this spiritual thought.

    1. Thank you for your thoughts.  What is your favorite scripture to get courage from?
